Armed With Information
In addition to trusting the staff at North Davidson Automotive, one key to becoming comfortable with the CEL is arming yourself with information. We’re pleased to help you do that. The lamp is part of the second-generation Onboard Diagnostic System or OBD-II. It fulfills the federal government’s mandate that all new vehicles sold in the United States since 1996 limit emissions by providing universal trouble codes to facility repairs related to combustion and exhaust. When you bring your car in with a lit malfunction indicator lamp, we’ll connect our computerized equipment to your OBD-II port. We’ll obtain the code that points us in the right direction. Then, we’ll use our knowledge and experience to pinpoint the exact problem to correct it for you. Sometimes, the problem that triggered the MIL is as simple as a loose gas cap. If it fits poorly, the sealed fuel system is breached. Typical underlying causes include a bad oxygen sensor that measures the amount of unburned oxygen in the exhaust and an ailing mass airflow sensor used to calculate the amount of incoming air available for combustion. In addition to other potential triggers, a rare but significant problem is a failing catalytic converter that removes some of the more harmful toxins before exhaust is expelled.
